Emerald Beach

Everything you need to know about Emerald Beach

Snuggled into the headland south of Patong, Emerald Beach ('Hat Tri Tra' in Thai) is the perfect place for sun lovers and those who are dead serious about going for the maximum tan. There is a long line of northern-facing sunbeds along this 500-metre beach and it is popular with guests from the nearby Merlin Beach Resort, being the nearest large beach to it.

This lovely beach is recognised on the Internet as being a peaceful haven of tranquility but ask the man in the street in nearby Patong where it is and he'll more than likely not know.

North-facing Emerald Beach has an open feel to it because, instead of the usual shade-providing palms and casuarinas, there is hinter beach vegetation and rough grass for over half of its length. You can relax in the shade near the restaurant or at the resort end but most of the beach basks in direct sunlight.

How to get there
Emerald Beach is to the southwest of Patong and is reached by going south along the last part of Patong's Beach Road. and taking a left turn at the Amari Coral Beach Resort. Go past Baan Yin Dee then turn down the road that leads to the Tri Trang Resort.

Alternatively, carry on the road past the Merlin Beach Resort until you come to Naik Rang at the foot of a hill and a restaurant on the sea side of the road called 'Windsulf' (this is really how it is spelled). You can access Emerald Beach by parking here and walking through this restaurant during high tide.

Facilities on the beach

Sun loungers go for the normal 200 baht for a set, and you can have an hour's beach massage for 400 baht and a pedicure for 300 baht. Both oil and foot massages are 400 baht and girls, if you want your hair braided it will cost 1,500 baht. Jet-skis operate from here and cost 1,500 baht an hour and you can parasail for 1,200 baht.

Snorkel sets are 300 baht an hour and going out on a sea kayak to explore the environs will cost 400 baht.

There are toilets at both ends of the beach; one in the 'Windsulf' restaurant and at the Tri Trang Resort.

Beach Eats

'Windsulf' is a very attractive looking place overlooking the sea. It has basic Thai and European food and its interior décor is wooden, quirky and unusual. You can rent snorkeling gear here too. There is a restaurant serving both Thai and international food at the resort end as well.

Beach activities

The waters off Emerald Beach are not deep and are also quite rocky so this makes swimming a little difficult except at high tide. The best place for swimming is the end of the beach closest to Patong. Emerald Beach is more of a quiet destination - especially when compared with busy Patong Beach, visible in the distance.

Beach vendors

Beach vendors occasionally pass by from Patong Beach but Emerald Beach is not on their priority list as it is quiet and isolated. If approached, a simple 'no thanks' and a smile is usually enough if you would prefer not to be disturbed. If you see something you like, make sure to bargain with them and to not accept their original asking prices.

The Beach - Surin

Surin Beach - A sun worshipper's guide

Surin is a magnificent long uncluttered beach but in low season, care must be taken when swimming as surf can be rough and tides strong. During the calm months, Surin's clear waters are good for snorkelling or kayaking. Boogie boarding and surfing are also popular activities.

Surin is the site of Thailand's second-oldest golf course, now being developed into a public park.

Surin is a 25-minute drive north from Patong. Pass through Kamala and carry on past Laem Singh Beach. At Surin there is a three-way junction. Take the sharp left turn down to the beach.

Surin Beach: What's Good
Beautiful water, large white beach
Lots of food and dining options
Good beach shopping
Shady dining areas
No jet-skis

Surin Beach: What's not
Swimming unsafe in low season

With many vendors and plenty of space sunbeds are no problem in Surin, if anything in low season there are too many.
A set (2 sunbeds, a table and an umbrella) costs THB 200 for one day (2008).
There are no public toilets at Surin Beach but toilets can be found in the restaurant that line most of the beach.

Beach Eats

Surin Beach probably has the best selection of food available of all the beaches in Phuket, that's one of the reasons why it's so popular with Thais.

Hawker stalls, selling everything from barbequed chicken to Som Tam (spicy Thai salad, delicious) to cut tropical fruits to drinks, can be found in the car park that's the main access to the beach.

Additionally most of the beach is lined with reasonable priced restaurants and bars which mainly feature pizza, Thai food and seafood.

Watersports in Surin Beach

Due to the lack of a launch area speedboats are rare which pleases many. In high season jetskis are launched from other beaches so don't feature as prominently as on other beaches.

Kayaks can be hired and is popular with exclusive Pansea Beach a short distance away and only accessible through the hotels there or via the sea. Laem Singh beach is a little further but within reach if kayaking.

In the low season (May - October) boogie boarding and surfing are popular. Due to rocks and the nature of the waves surfing is best left to the who know what they're doing, beginners should check out the north end of Kamala Beach for more favourable conditions. Surin offers some good surfing opportunities at both ends of the beach. There are good waves on the high tide or on the low-mid tide. Watch out for the group of large rocks in the middle of the beach. The last rock at the northern end results in a sandbank with a fast left-hander.

Beach Activities

In high season the water at Surin Beach is exceptionally clear and some good snorkeling can be found by the rocks at the north and south ends of the beach. Equipment can be rented on the beach easily. In low season the water is not clear and the waves make snorkelling very difficult.

Volleyball is played when there's enough participants, there's a net close to the car park.

Throughout the length several salas have been set up for Thai massage at the top of the beach.

Beach Vendors

No visit to Surin Beach would be complete without buying an ice cream from the ice cream seller who walks the beach wearing a lion mask. He performs a hilariously funny unknown song with full air guitar.

Other beach vendors will try to sell you all manner of things such as silk, wood carvings, costume jewelery and clothes. Don't be surprised if you see some really odd items being hawked around.

A polite 'no thank you' is all that's required to ensure they pass you by. Should you wish to look at something on offer you're not obliged to make a purchase.

Don't forget to bargain if you want to buy something! Never accept the starting price and always smile! If you're really not interested it's enough to smile and shake your head. They will understand a softly delivered, ‘no thank you'.

Banana Rock Beach

Everything you need to know about Banana Rock Beach

Beautiful and almost deserted, Banana Rock Beach is not known to many people in Phuket as it is relatively isolated. Nevertheless, it really is one of Phuket's most glittering gems as far as beaches go and has the aura of a 'hidden beach'.

It is 180 metres long and features beautifully clear water. At high tide the waves can sometimes wash up as high as the tree line so care should be taken as to where you install yourself along this beach; the extreme southern and northern ends are perhaps the best bet.

How to get there
Banana Rock Beach is situated between Bang Tao and Nai Thon beaches, some 500 metres north of Trisara Villas. You have to have sharp eyes to spot the beach through the trees that line the road but there are two places that lend access to the beach. If coming from the south (Bang Tao), pass Trisara and slow down when the road dips down.

You will see where the barbed wire fence on the left-hand side of the road is covered with plastic. Park there and walk down through the trees. Alternatively, 150 metres farther on there is a white metal sign saying 'To Nai Thon' next to a small parking space. Follow the bamboo-lined trail, scale down the hill, cross the river and you will see that the trail leads to the beach's northern end. Quite a few people choose to rent a longtail from other beaches to come here. Ask for 'Hat Hin Kluay'..

Facilities on Banana Rock Beach

You can rent a set of sun loungers and parasols for 200 baht from Khun Jan, who also runs the seafood restaurant at the south end. She also rents out her longtail boat in high season.

Beach eats

There is a seafood restaurant right on the beach that is open during high season. Sit and enjoy one of the loveliest spots on the island.

Beach activities

Banana Rock Beach has fantastically clear water for swimming from November to May but is definitely not a swimming beach the rest of the year. There are several masseuses in the shade right next to the restaurant who charge 300 baht an hour.

Kamala Beach

Everything you need to know about Kamala

Just north of the lights and noise of Patong lies Kamala Beach, a quieter stretch of sand with more relaxed feel. This well-enclosed bay and fishing village surrounded by forested hills is one of the most beautiful places in Phuket.

With its quieter pace, over the last few years, Kamala has become a favoured spot for retirees and other longer-term visitors staying in small hotels, villas and apartment rentals nestled around the village. On the headland to the south, are a number of luxury villa developments, with great views of Kamala Bay and beyond along its winding road.

Whilst Kamala doesn't attract tourists in the same numbers as other places it has a certain niche, those who do come say 'we like it just the way it is, don't tell anyone as they'll all come and spoil it'.

Kamala Beach is a beautiful long stretch of beach that's pretty deserted, even in high season. The main reason it's deserted is there aren't the same high numbers of tourists in Kamala as some other places so there's plenty of space.

A day spent on the beach is truly a lazy day, not too many distractions......perfect. May to October the waves at the north end of the beach attract surfers.

Kamala is the kind of place to relax with friends in a small restaurant or local bar, so nightlife tends to be low-key however there is an area where it's focused.

The main evening attraction is the celebrated Phuket FantaSea entertainment complex, which attracts visitors from all over the island.

Dining options are beginning to expand as more local restaurants open their doors. Seafood features highly on menus throughout Kamala as does Thai food. Several good restaurants that offer steaks and other international dishes are located close to the main nightlife area.

Some excellent food can be found from the hawkers that setup their stalls at various places around Kamala.

Tourist items such as various silks, wood carvings, beachwear, batik items, jewellery and tailors shops can be found all around Kamala, use your bartering skills if necessary.

Mini marts offer bread, milk, eggs etc but there's no supermarket of note. Twice a week there's an interesting fresh food market where you can find meat (very fresh) and all the fruit and vegetables you'd expect and many you probably haven't seen before.

koh phi phi beach

Situated in the Andaman sea amongst breathtaking lime rock formations, Koh Phi-Phi's twin islands, Phi-Phi Don and Phi-Phi Ley, are equal distance from both Krabi and Phuket and easily accessible from both.

The most popular spot is Tonsai Beach, situated in the "lungs" of Phi-Phi Don. Along here are beautiful bunglow complexes and beachfront restaurants and bars.

Nightime on Phi-Phi is a fairly relaxed time for most. There are a few places to really go wild and let your hair down and also some excellent restaurants to sample the local delights. Pretty much something for everyone.

With more and more visitors each year, plus having the Hollywood movie "The Beach" filmed here, prices are now increasing with demand but despite this, Phi-Phi still makes a worthwhile trip.

Phi Phi's islands may not be big, but they're a monster-sized playground. Diving and snorkelling top the list of exciting ways to spend a day (or three), and the clear waters around Phi Phi are perfect for checking out the rich marine life.

Phi Phi what to do

Hire a longtail boat – the beach-to-beach water taxi of choice – and let a local show you the area's many remote beaches and private coves. Cliff diving, sunbathing, reading, exercising, hiking, rock climbing – the possibilities are plentiful.

Kata Beach

Towards the southern end of Phuket is Kata Beach, which is divided into Kata Yai and Kata Noi. Both beaches offer stunning scenery and a relaxed atmosphere.

Kata Yai
This is the larger of the two beaches. The bay is very picturesque with Koh Pu (Pu Island) at the northern end. Half of the beach is bordered by a road, while the southern half has a few resorts right on the beach. Club Med occupies a large portion of the land behind the beach road towards the northern end of the beach, keeping that end of the beach fairly quiet.

Due to its fairly small size, Kata has a cozy feel about it and is great for families. There are quite a few shops, restaurants and bars around Kata Centre and between Kata Yai and Kata Noi. Kata is perhaps the best compromise between the hectic pace of Patong and some of the quieter beaches on Phuket.

Kata Noi
Kata Noi only has a few hotels and is dominated by the Kata Thani Hotel. The beach is lovely and there has only been a little development.

Accommodation

There is a good range of accommodation in Kata, from luxury resorts to budget guesthouses behind the beach. At the southern end of Kata Yai beginning at Kata Beach Resort there are hotels right on the beach, which are a rarity on Phuket's west coast.

Activities

There are plenty of watersports to be enjoyed at Kata. The bay is excellent for sailing and plays host to the annual King's Cup Regatta every December.

Kata Yai and Kata Noi are quite popular with surfers during the rainy season. You can rent all kinds of boards on the beach. It is also one of the best beaches on the island for snorkelling. Confident swimmers can try swimming out towards Koh Pu to view the beautiful coral there, although don't attempt this during the rainy season. The area to the South of Kata Noi beach has some decent coral that is worth exploring.

Dining

There is a good variety of restaurants in Kata, especially around Kata Centre. Restaurants serving Thai, Italian, Scandinavian and of course seafood can all be found here. Restaurants right on the beach can also be found at the southern end of Kata Yai.

Nightlife

Nightlife in Kata is pretty laid-back although there are quite a few bars to be found, mostly around Kata Centre. There are also a collection of beer-bars heading inland from the junction at Kata Center. However, for a big night out you are better off heading to Patong.
